Fair Wisconsin's Executive Director, Glenn Carlson, and a lesbian couple from Verona who plan to marry this summer California were featured in a CNN story about the obscure 1915 Wisconsin law that could impose penalties on gay and lesbian couples who marry out of state.

July 3
The Capital Times and Milwaukee Journal Sentinel both reported today that gay and lesbian couples from Wisconsin who travel to California to get married could face a penalty upon their return. Wisconsin is a state that imposes criminal penalties on residents if they enter a marriage outside the state that would be prohibited in the state. The law was created to prohibit underage couples from crossing state lines to marry, but it could be interpreted to apply to same-sex marriages. In Wisconsin, the penalty is a fine of up to $10,000, nine months in prison, or both. Please contact us if you are planning to get married in California this year.
